Continental to join the RE100 initiative
Continental has joined the global RE100 initiative. The aim of RE100 (renewable electricity), led by The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, is to promote electricity from renewable sources. It now has more than 230 influential companies on board committed to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewables by 2050 at the latest.
In mid-2019, Continental adopted its new environmental strategy, with a commitment to transition to renewable electricity for global production by the end of 2020. The first step, mainly involves using proof of origin to certify how and where electricity from renewables is produced. The main focus here is on wind and solar energy. In the 2019 fiscal year, the proportion of electricity obtained from renewable energy sources was 5.3% of the total amount of electricity purchased.
With the complete transition toward electricity from renewable sources, we are reducing our scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions (caused by combustion in our plants and purchased energy) by approximately 70%, thus significantly supporting our goal of becoming CO2 neutral (in scope 1 and 2 emissions) by the end of 2040.
