Electronic Brake Pedal: Key Component of Future Brake Systems
- Continental presents the first prototype of a purely electronic brake pedal
- The groundbreaking technology is a further step towards highly automated driving
At the TechShow, Continental is showing the first prototype of a purely electronic brake pedal in a demonstration vehicle. This technology allows new freedom in the packaging of the brake system, since a hydraulic connection is no longer necessary. In addition to acoustic advantages, this also offers improved occupant protection in the event of an accident. In addition, the electronic brake pedal provides a consistent pedal feel, regardless of whether braking is conventional, recuperative or even with a degraded (faulty) system.
Overall, the technology is a key element of future by-wire braking systems from Continental as an essential prerequisite for highly automated driving up to Level 5. In addition, the electronic brake pedal, like current simulator braking systems, helps to increase efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. It is the absolutely necessary step towards a future dry brake that can already be seen at the TechShow.
