Ac2ated Sound: Immersive Audio System without Speakers

  • Continental uses interior surfaces to generate sound
  • System enables weight and installation space reduction of up to 90 percent
  • New placement options of the sound sources enable a novel sound experience and sound zones
  • World premiere: Continental presents exterior sound with actuators for improved safety and sporty sound experience

Ac2ated Sound is the name of the innovative audio system that produces sounds without conventional speakers. Instead, specially developed actuators cause certain surfaces of the vehicle interior to vibrate: for example, A-pillar panels, head restraints, door panels or the rear shelf. In combination with special audio software, this produces an immersive and three-dimensional sound. The speakerless sound system is inspired by classical stringed instruments, with the wooden body acting as a resonance body. Because the new Ac2ated Sound audio technology no longer requires loudspeakers, up to 90 percent of the installation space and weight of conventional audio systems can be saved. This reduces energy consumption and thus CO2 emissions. At the same time, this opens up new freedom for interior designers. In addition, the actuators can be placed in areas where conventional loudspeakers are difficult to accommodate, e.g., in the headliner or in the headrest. This is essential for creating sound zones and an immersive sound experience.

In addition to being used as an audio system in the interior, the actuators developed by Continental are also ideally suited for generating exterior sounds in electric and hybrid vehicles. The technology is characterized for outdoor use by its high media resistance (water, dust, rockfall) and its space-saving integration. In addition, both the legal requirements for an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) can be met and high-quality sports sounds can be achieved for a brand-specific sound experience.

Ac2ated Sound enters its first small series production with the next generation of vehicles. The new system is particularly interesting for electric cars, as in these models every weight saving is highly welcome. Because less weight always means more range.
