360° All-round Protection: Continental Makes Traffic Safer for Pedestrians, Cyclists and Beyond

  • Sensor package with radar and camera units helps to avoid accidents
  • Vulnerable road users account for half of the world's road deaths

Continental is making road traffic safer for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter users. The technology company is equipping vehicles with 360° all-round protection for this purpose, which can be experienced at the TechShow. This 360° all-round protection package includes two short-range radar sensors each at the front and rear of the vehicle as well as one camera and one long-range radar sensor at the front of the vehicle. All of Continental's sensor systems work together in real time to prevent accidents in critical traffic situations, such as when reversing or turning in confusing traffic scenarios. If, for example, a cyclist approaching in the blind spot is overlooked by the driver, the system stops the vehicle to avoid a collision.

The prevention of accidents with weaker road users (also known as vulnerable road users or VRU)  increases road safety immensely – especially since this proportion of road users is constantly increasing due to new mobility offers like e-scooters, e-bikes or e-skateboards. The cause of accidents is often a lack of perceptibility of the weaker road users, for example in poor visibility, inattention of the driver or carelessness. According to the German Society for Traffic Psychology, about half of the people killed in road traffic worldwide are "vulnerable road users".
