Autonomous Trucks with High-tech Power from Continental

A big semitrailer truck cruises along the Interstate 10 highway headed for Houston, Texas. Its cargo? Fresh strawberries from the California coast. The special thing about this apparently everyday freight transport is that no one is sitting behind the wheel – the truck drives itself. A utopia? More like a snapshot of the near future. In fact, after millions of monitored test kilometers under real traffic conditions and in simulated tests, fully self-driving trucks are about to make their debut on US highways – thanks to key technology from Continental on board, developed together with partner Aurora. Here, built-in safety systems play a crucial role.

Since 2011, Continental as a technology company has periodically conducted mobility studies that focus on a variety of topics. The focus of this survey was on attitudes toward automated and autonomous driving: What role does driving play for the respondents? How willing are they to relinquish control and what significance do technological developments have for them? These questions are fundamental to acceptance of the technology. Openness to various assistance systems, also and especially to autonomous vehicles, was also queried.

Radar Vision Parking

Continental’s Radar Vision Parking makes it possible to reduce parking garage accidents and can be used in existing parking facilities. Early parking slot detection, for example, lets users park in a single stroke without driving past the spot. As radars are very compact, they can be mounted behind all painted bumpers. Together with cameras, they provide a redundant, seamless 360° view around the vehicle.
