Continental Is Making American Public Transport More Comfortable

  • Holistic solutions for safe, quiet and comfortable rail transport
  • Growing commitment in bus transport: Air springs meet the highest quality requirements

Hanover, Germany, September 2017. Whether metro train, regional train or the bus network: Urban passenger transportation is becoming increasingly important in American metropolises such as New York, Boston and Chicago in order to reduce congestion on busy roads and traffic chaos in these chronically gridlocked cities. Numerous public transport projects have already been launched across the country. Continental technologies are helping here: For example, the company’s double-convoluted air spring system will help to further increase ride comfort in the trains of the Boston metro in the future – the prototype has already been delivered. Continental is also working closely with leading rail vehicle manufacturers in the U.S. The suspension systems will be installed, finalized and checked in the U.S. Continental is presenting its current air spring portfolio for comfortable, quiet and safe travel with urban public transport at the APTA Expo in Atlanta, (October 9–11, hall C1, booth 8931).

Solving technological challenges in rail transport

For Continental, the railway transportation industry is a key and strategically important industry, offering a range of growth opportunities for innovations and technologies. Continental’s ContiTech division develops railway transportation products that not only are robust and durable, but also help to significantly enhance safety. Whether in the bogie of the carriage or locomotive, in air-conditioning and heating systems, or in the interior trim, our experts develop holistic solutions that overcome many of the technological challenges currently facing rail vehicle manufacturers.

In addition to suspension systems and rubber-metal parts, our portfolio – which is being refined and expanded all the time – encompasses products such as folding bellows and hoses.

With innovations in lightweight design and the integration of sensor technology in its products, Continental is seeking to be among those helping to shape the future of the industry. This is why the technology company has been involved in numerous research projects over the years aimed at making railway transportation safer, quieter and more comfortable.

Growing commitment in the bus sector

North American bus manufacturers and operators are also benefiting from the international technology company’s expertise in air springs. Continental is developing air springs for the open replacement market that fulfill the very highest quality standards in accordance with the requirements of vehicle manufacturers. The company is continuously expanding its extensive product range. As a result, it already covers nearly every application on the North American replacement market – from axles fitted with air springs to seats with air springs. The high availability is an important asset as well, which ContiTech has achieved through local production in North America.
