Austria's pioneer for electromobility relies on commercial vehicle tires from Continental

  • Freight forwarder Schlager Transport Logistik relies on Continental tire solutions for its e-truck fleet
  • Designed for electric drive: Conti Eco tires score with durability and optimum rolling resistance
  • TCO and CO2 reduction: ContiConnect digital tire management increases fleet efficiency and sustainability

Hanover, Germany, March 25, 2025. Continental and the Austrian transport company Schlager Transport Logistik are working together to implement the transformation to sustainable logistics. The pioneer of electric mobility Hubert Schlager is convinced of the alternative drive type and shows that it can be successfully used in the logistics industry. As a customer for decades, the entrepreneur relies on Continental tires and the ContiConnect digital tire pressure monitoring system. Schlager's five electric trucks have already driven a total of 540,000 kilometers. “We are convinced that electromobility is the future in the transport industry,” says Hubert Schlager. In the meantime, the haulier has also been able to motivate other transport companies to switch to e-trucks.

Green logistics: tires are the key to sustainability

The forwarding company Schlager with 45 employees has been a Continental customer for 20 years. “Our experience has shown that the tires have a long service life,” says Managing Director Hubert Schlager. His fleet uses Conti Eco tires, which offer high mileage with optimum rolling resistance. These are the tire criteria that efficiently increase the sustainability of a fleet. “Tires are the key to greater sustainability for trucks,” adds Sascha Ferdinandt, Area Manager Fleet Solutions at Continental Tire Austria. “To ensure that Schlager's vehicles are always on the road with the right tire pressure, the company opted for our ContiConnect digital tire management system several years ago.” All 20 vehicles in the fleet are equipped with the tire sensor system. “We have had very good experiences with it,” reports the freight forwarder with satisfaction. ContiConnect ensures that the fleet is energy-efficient on the road. This has a positive effect on the total cost of ownership (TCO), reduces CO2 emissions and significantly increases fleet efficiency.

Actively on the road to transformation

For freight forwarder Hubert Schlager, thinking ahead innovatively and investing in the future are among the main tasks of an entrepreneur. “I want to make my company fit for the future. That's why we are working intensively on sustainable logistics,” says the fleet manager. “It is important to us to set an example and show that it is already possible to use electromobility in the transport sector.” The vehicle technology is already available and manufacturers now offer various commercial vehicles with electric drives. “We are currently using five electric trucks and want to convert our entire fleet by 2030.”

Economical e-truck operation thanks to own charging infrastructure

Vehicles are no longer the obstacle on the road to the transformation from combustion engines to alternative drive systems. “A lack of charging options for commercial vehicles and a lack of price transparency without truck tariffs are currently slowing down the expansion of electromobility in the transport sector,” says electric pioneer Hubert Schlager. “We have solved this with our own charging infrastructure on our company premises.” With six rapid charging points and an energy storage system including a large photovoltaic system, the freight forwarder currently operates one of the largest charging infrastructures for commercial vehicles in Austria. The combination of in-house power generation, depot charging, state subsidies and toll savings due to the reduced emissions of the e-trucks makes their operation economical.  “The 75 percent reduction in tolls alone saves us 16,000 euros per vehicle per year. We have recouped the investment for the vehicles in four years,” calculates Hubert Schlager.

Taking sustainability seriously

Spedition Schlager and Continental want to work together to drive forward the transformation to electromobility. “We take the topic of sustainability seriously, just like the topic of electromobility,” confirms Sascha Ferdinandt from Continental Reifen Austria. “That's why we have long been developing all of our tires so that they are suitable for electric drives and increase the sustainability of fleets.”
