Allround Protection: Networking for even more Safety

  • New airbag system functions for even better occupant protection
  • In the future, sensors will also detect possible battery damage in electric vehicles

Continental is working on a new, comprehensive approach for increased safety in the vehicle. Among other things, sensor data from the vehicle's environment is networked with data from the interior. In the event of a collision, the airbag deployment strategy can be adapted to the respective situation. Depending on the position in which the occupants are located, individual airbags can be deployed in a controlled manner. The position of the backrests can also be adapted within milliseconds. In addition, the new Airbag Control Valve will make it possible in the future for the filling pressure to be variably dosed and maintained as required. The result of all these new functions under the motto "Allround Protection": The risk of injury to the occupants is significantly reduced.

The comprehensive protection function of the "Allround Protection" goes even further. Continental is working on sensing damage to the high-voltage battery in electric cars. For example, the driver is warned of possible battery damage after a bump or rockfall on the underbody. Even light scratches and contacts with the car body can be detected and classified via sound sensors in the Contact Sensor System (CoSSy) in order to make driving even safer in the future.
