Smart Traffic Infrastructure Systems: Parking garage with IQ

  • Continental equips traffic infrastructure with intelligent sensors
  • One area of application is Automated Valet Parking: Premiere at the IAA 2021

Continental shows how the traffic infrastructure will communicate with cars in the future and take over the central control of automated parking and orchestration of vehicles. Together with the Leipzig-based start-up Kopernikus Automotive, the technology company recently presented a solution for infrastructure-based, autonomous parking at the IAA 2021 in Munich, Germany: Automated Valet Parking, Type 2. Via a user app, the vehicle and its control are handed over to an intelligent system, which then automatically parks it.

The system shows once again that key components from Continental can also be used in eco-systems beyond the vehicle. With the information of infrastructure cameras, an intelligent algorithm in a central control system processes the sensor data and coordinates the movements of the vehicles. Infrastructure-based object detection, dynamic route planning as well as emergency braking, and further functions are integrated. The vehicles only need automatic transmissions, an electric parking brake, an electric steering assistance and an intelligent communication unit to be maneuvered through the infrastructure. From 2023, the innovative system from Kopernikus Automotive and Continental will be able to be integrated into various infrastructure systems, such as vehicle production plants, parking garages, e.g., at airports, train stations or hotels.
