Server-based Architectures: Digital Heart of the Car

  • Continental is a pioneer and already supplies high-performance vehicle computers and software
  • New architecture enables functionality, updates, and upgrades

Digitalization and connectivity are the key automotive disciplines of the future. They have an impact on products (and technologies), processes (working methods and relationships) and business models, and require a new, centralized electrical/electronic architecture of the vehicle: the computing power of more than a hundred individual electronic control units (ECUs) is concentrated in a few central computer units. Continental recognized this early on and, with the In-Car Application Server 1 for Volkswagen's ID series, is the world's first supplier to deliver a server-based architecture for large-scale production. Continental understands and masters these new vehicle architectures, shapes their integration and creates project management at the highest level of complexity. This year and next, Continental's high-performance computers will be launched in more than 20 new vehicle models. This means that the software – and functionality – of these connected vehicles can be upgraded and updated at any time.

While the current order volume for high-performance computers from Continental is around 5 billion euros, the company's developers are already working on the next generation of vehicle computers. These cross-domain computers will form the heart of the Continental Automotive Edge Framework, which also includes software packages, cloud platforms, services and applications. This server-based, digital heart of future vehicles will be unveiled at CES 2022. Among other things, the technology is the foundation for upcoming, highly automated driving functions.
