Empowering Women in Leadership: My EMBA Journey with Continental

Embarking on a journey of growth and self-discovery is never easy, but with the right support, it becomes possible. For me, that support came from both the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management EMBA Program and my employer, Continental. I’m Mary Joy Mendiola, a Project Manager in the Group IT at Continental since 2018, and this is my story of pursuing an Executive MBA (EMBA*) while breaking barriers as a female leader in the corporate world.

Growing up in Manila, education was a cornerstone of my upbringing. The relentless pursuit of excellence was ingrained in me from a young age. This drive stayed with me when I moved to Germany, where I discovered a work culture that values practical experience. This cultural shift ignited my ambition to further develop my education and step up my game—not just for myself, but for all women aspiring to leadership roles.

What made this journey possible was the openness of Continental. The encouragement I received, particularly through open communication and collaboration with my manager, was instrumental. Aligning my academic aspirations with my professional responsibilities required careful planning and ongoing dialogue, ensuring that my role at Continental remained impactful while I pursued my studies. Their support empowered me to bring back new insights and leadership skills, benefiting both my personal growth and the organization’s innovative culture. This shared investment in my development underscores Continental's dedication to nurturing talent and driving progress within the company and beyond.

The EMBA program, which I joined in 2023, has been a game-changer for me. Interacting with professionals from various industries and backgrounds has broadened my perspective and enriched my learning experience. It’s not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about developing advanced leadership skills and understanding the importance of inclusive leadership. With Continental’s unwavering support and the invaluable experiences gained through the EMBA program, I am now more equipped to foster a culture of innovation by embracing diverse perspectives. I am excited to apply my new skills and insights to drive innovation and growth at Continental.

For anyone doubting their ability to lead, remember: your unique perspective is your strength. It’s precisely what the business world needs today. Together, we can break barriers and pave the way for future women leaders. - So be brave, take a leap, and be open to embracing change yourself!

*"EMBA" stands for Executive Master of Business Administration. It is a specialized MBA program designed for experienced professionals, executives, and managers who want to enhance their leadership skills, strategic thinking, and business acumen while continuing to work full-time.
