Responsible Sourcing of Natural Rubber
Continental takes on pioneering role
Sustainability is an integral part of Continental Tires “Vision 2030” strategy program. Our goal is to be the most progressive tire company in terms of environmental and social responsibility by 2030.
An essential raw material for excellent tire functionality remains natural rubber. Hence, we are committed to responsibly sourced natural rubber and proactively strive to minimize all environmental, human rights and social risks that we identify along our global natural rubber supply chain.
We systematically invest in research and development in the fields of new technologies, alternative materials and environmentally compatible production processes. Through these efforts, we are aiming for a gradual transition to 100 percent sustainably produced materials in our tire products as well as a 100 percent responsible supply chain by 2050 at the latest.
Responsible Value Chain
Natural rubber is still essential for ensuring outstanding tire performance. This natural product accounts for between 10 and 40 percent of the entire weight of modern, high-performance tires. The special properties of natural rubber include the high level of strength and durability caused by the strain-induced crystallization of the rubber. Natural rubber is currently obtained almost exclusively from the rubber tree Hevea Brasiliensis.
Continental's ambition is to source all natural rubber for its tire production from responsible sources from 2030 onwards. In order to achieve this, Continental is particularly pressing ahead with increasing the transparency of supply chains. Innovative technology, digitalization, education projects, and systematic risk mapping are the main tools that Continental uses to make supply chains more sustainable.
